Olympics 2016, track and field schedule: Usain Bolt’s final run for gold comes in 4x100 relay

Bolt and his Jamaican teammates race for 4x100-meter relay glory.

Usain Bolt is racing in the Olympics only one more time. He’ll race for his third gold medal of the games -- and ninth in his career -- with his Jamaican teammates in the 4x100-meter relay on Friday night in Rio. It’s the second-to-last night of track and field action, and there are plenty of medal events on the track.

Bolt and the Jamaican team are favored to win the men’s 4x100. Team USA, with Justin Gatlin on the squad, should be solid, but they haven’t won gold since the Sydney Games in 2000 and haven’t medaled since 2004 -- they often struggle to get the baton around the track within in the zones or without dropping it. Jamaica set the world record in London, and it would be a surprise if Bolt couldn’t get a gold medal in his final Olympic race.

The U.S. won the women’s 4x100 meters in London, but will have their hands full with Jamaica in Rio. Tori Bowie won the silver medal in the 100 for the U.S., but the Jamaicans, led by Elaine Thompson, finished first and third. Team USA shouldn’t be counted out, but it won’t be an easy run for gold.

Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia, who won gold in the 10,000 meters in a world record time, will go for double gold in the women’s 5,000 meters. Her final 5,000 of the 10K was run in 14:30, a time that would be an Olympic record in the 5,000 -- so she should be good to go.

Other event finals include the men’s and women’s race walks in the morning, and the women’s pole vault and men’s hammer throw in the evening.

All events will be streaming live. Here’s a schedule of the events and how you can watch them:
