Ivory Coast’s Cheick Sallah Cissé won men’s 80kg taekwondo gold with a buzzer-beating kick to steal the match as time expired and leave Great Britain’s Lutalo Muhammad in shock with silver. The win came right after some controversy earlier in the third round when Muhammad landed a shot that knocked Cissé‘s helmet straight off. However, it was disqualified due to his hand placement assisting him on the strike.

The women’s 67kg gold medal match was close up until the final seconds as well, ending with South Korea’s Oh Hye-Ri taking gold, 13-12. France’s Haby Niare took silver. Niare led 3-0 after the first round with a kick to the back of Hye-Ri’s head, but a flurry of moves and countermoves saw the Korean swing a 10-point second round to take the lead 10-4. Niare came back, but it was too late as Hye-Ri hung on for the win.
In the men’s 80kg bronze medal match, Azerbaijan’s Milad Beigi Harchegani defeated Poland’s Piotr Pazinski by points gap 12-0. Harchegani scored four of those points in the first round.
Turkey’s Nur Tatar won bronze in the women’s 67kg match over Taipei’s Chia-Chia Chuang, 7-3. Chuang flashed a smile after landing the first hit of the match to take a 3-0 lead over Tatar, and that lead held until Tatar scored seven unanswered points to steal the medal.
The opening two medal matches weren’t nearly as close. Ivory Coast’s Ruth Gbagbi beat Azerbaijan’s Farida Azizova to win bronze in the women’s 67kg, 7-1, and Tunisia’s Oussama Oueslati won bronze in the men’s 80kg over the United States’ Steven Lopez, 14-5.
