The Americans added two medals to their count on Friday night with a gold medal in the women’s 4x100 relay and silver medal in the women’s pole vault. The US now leads by 40 total medals over China and has 14 more golds than Great Britain.
Olympic medal count 2016: Allyson Felix and Team USA win gold in 4x100 relay to add to lead
No country is catching the Americans.

It was a dramatic 24 hours for the women’s 4x100 team after dropping the baton in the qualifier after a collision, protesting the loss and then rerunning the event as the only team on the track later that night. But through it all, the Americans proved they were worthy with a dominant showing for gold. With a 41.01 time, they beat the Jamaicans, giving Allyson Felix her fifth Olympic gold -- the most for any women’s track and field athlete ever. Jamaica placed second and Great Britain third.
Sandi Morris won silver in the women’s pole vault event, narrowly missing gold when her leg barely grazed the bar on her final attempt. Greece’s Ekaterini Stefanidi won gold and New Zealand’s Eliza McCartney bronze.
The US men’s 4x100 relay team would have added to the medal count with a bronze, but were disqualified after a faulty pass between their first and second runners. The Jamaican team took gold after an incredible final leg from none other than Usain Bolt. Japan took silver and Canada bronze.
In taekwondo, Ivory Coast’s Cheick Sallah Cissé won gold in the men’s 80kg in the final second over Great Britain’s Lutalo Muhammad. South Korea’s Oh Hye-Ri beat France’s Haby Niare in the women’s 67kg to win gold.
