Olympic taekwondo 2016 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch Saturday’s matches online

Heavyweights take to the mat on Saturday for the final day of Olympic taekwondo action.

In the world of taekwondo, it doesn’t get any bigger than this. Literally.

Heavyweights will take to the mat on Saturday morning for the final day of taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics. One man and one woman will leave Rio de Janeiro draped in gold after a full day of combat at the Faliro Sports Pavilion.

The sport has undergone several changes in recent years after several questionable scoring decisions tainted the 2008 Olympics. As a result, the 2016 Games will be the second where competitors wear special electronic vests that track blows. Spinning blows, traditionally more difficult to land with success, are now worth additional points as well.

Saturday’s action could mark the coming out party for 20-year-old American Jackie Galloway. Galloway will be making her first Olympic appearance after serving as an alternate for the London Games. She’s a dynamic talent with strong turning kicks and the ability to close the distance on her opponents with quickness.

However, she’ll need to pull off a few upsets to find her spot on the podium. Mexico’s Maria del Rosario Espinoza is a rangy veteran and Saturday’s odds-on favorite. Espinoza won gold in 2008 and bronze at the last Olympics. Behind her, China’s Shuyin Zheng will use her reach advantage and an unorthodox new school style to bully her way through the round of 16.

On the men’s side, 2015 world champion Dmitriy Shokin will attempt to defend his title against a field of burly strikers. Iran’s Sajjad Mardani and Azerbaijan’s Radek Isaev are both medal threats as well. The top-qualifying American, Stephen Lambdin, will face some long odds to make it to the podium.
