Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia bested Selim Yasar of Turkey in the men’s freestyle wrestling 86kg division’s gold medal match at the Rio Olympics on Saturday. That left Yasar with the silver medal after he was unable to score any technical points on the Russian.
2016 Olympic wrestling results: Turkey earns gold, silver medals on Saturday
Turkey earned gold and silver medals in freestyle wrestling at the Olympics on Saturday. They earned gold in the 125kg and silver in the 86kg divisions.


The men’s 125kg freestyle wrestling division was also taking place on Saturday. It also featured a Turkish athlete in Taha Akgul. He was facing Komeil Nemat Ghasemi of Iran, and came out on top, earning a gold for Turkey. Both a gold and silver for Turkey has to constitute a successful day of competition.
In the 86kg division, Sharif Sharifov of Azerbaijan took down Pedro Francisco Ceballos Fuentes of Venezuela in the first bronze medal match. J’den Michael Tbory Cox of the United States earned the other bronze medal by besting Reineris Salas Perez of Cuba. Both Cox and Salas Perez were losers in the semifinal round, and bested repechage opponents in the bronze medal matches.
For the men’s 125kg division, Ibrahim Saidau of Belarus took down Levan Berianidze of Armenia to win the first bronze medal. American Tervel Ivaylov Dlagnev participated in the other one, but he fell to Geno Petriashvili of Georgia for the other bronze. Both Saidau and Petriashvili were losers in the quarterfinals but fought back through the repechage round to take down the semifinal losers in the bronze matches.
The final wrestling rounds will take place on Sunday, which is also the last day of the Olympics. They will include the men’s freestyle 65kg and men’s freestyle 97kg divisions. Elimination rounds, repechage rounds and medal matches will take place on the day.
