Little League World Series scores and bracket 2016: Rhode Island, Mexico among Saturday winners

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday at the 2016 Little League World Series was the first elimination day of the tournament, and four teams saw their championship hopes dashed on the third day of competition. But among the winners on Sunday were Rhode Island and Mexico.

The kids from Warwick, Rhode Island, representing the New England region, were 8-0 winners over Bend, Oregon, representing the Northwest, on Saturday at Williamsport, Penn. Rhode Island shortstop Domenic Brazeau was 3-for-3 with a double in the win, and so far through two games in this Little League World Series is 5-for-5 with a walk and two doubles.

Oregon may have lost, but second baseman Evan Ullman made a highlight-reel double play, snaring this pop up in right field, then turned to nail a runner at the plate:

New England will play again on Monday, against the loser of Sunday’s Great Lakes/Midwest tilt.

In the nightcap, the West team from Chula Vista, Calif. outlasted the Southwest team from San Antonio, 5-0.

On the international side, Mexico beat Italy (Europe-Africa) in a high-scoring affair, 12-7, thanks in large part to two home runs and three RBI from shortstop Gael Cortes. Mexico moves on to play another elimination game on Monday, against the loser of Sunday's contest between Canada and Asia-Pacific.

The team from Curacao, representing the Caribbean, eliminated Japan with a 2-1 win

The four 0-2 teams will play in a pair of consolation games, with Europe-Africa playing Northwest on Monday and Japan playing Southwest on Tuesday.
