2016 Olympics, track and field results: Allyson Felix wins 6th gold medal with 4x400 relay win

The men’s and women’s teams won gold in the 4x400, plus Matthew Centrowitz won the first gold for the US since 1908 in the 1500 meters.

Allyson Felix didn’t win individual gold, but after winning the 4x100 on Friday, she anchored the 4x400 to gold on Saturday night to up her medal total to six on Saturday night. Felix got the baton in the lead and extended it, bringing her team of Courtney Okolo, Natasha Hastings and Phillys Francis to a win -- the sixth straight for the US women.

The Jamaican team won silver and the team from Great Britain finished third.

The US men added a win in the 4x400, too, thanks to a punishing anchor leg from LaShawn Merritt. He closed it out after Gil Roberts handed him the baton in the lead after the first three legs. The Botswana team was close after the third baton exchange, but they faded to fifth in the final straight. Jamaica won silver and the Bahamas, who won in 2012, took bronze.

It was a thrilling final night of track in Rio, here’s what happened the rest of the night:

Matthew Centrowitz, Jr. won the first gold medal in the men’s 1500 for Team USA since 1908

Centrowitz took the lead early and never surrendered it, holding off the pack in the final straightaway to win the gold medal in a slow time of 3:50.00. Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria won silver in 3:50.11 and Nick Willis of New Zealand won bronze in 3:50.24. Centrowitz finished fourth in the 2012 Olympic games, but had won bronze in the 2011 world championships and silver in the 2013 world champs. The gold not only gave him one of each medal, but fulfilled his Olympic dream.

Paul Chelimo DQ’d, then reinstated in 5,000 as Mo Farah wins gold

Mo Farah raced to an easy win in the men’s 5,000 meters thanks to his filthy finishing kick, which beat out the US’s Paul Chelimo in the silver medal position. Chelimo was momentarily disqualified from the race due to stepping on the inside lane, but was later reinstated. The judges in Olympics often mess things up, but they rectified this situation after originally disqualifying Chelimo.
