It’s the final day of the 2016 Summer Olympics, but there are still medals to be awarded before the closing ceremonies. USA Basketball will attempt to stretch its golden streak to three straight Olympics, while the men’s marathon and team handball finals will each conclude in the run-up to the Games’ big finale.
Olympics 2016 schedule: Time and TV schedule for Sunday’s events
Olympic basketball will crown a champion, and Americans Galen Rupp and Meb Kaflezighi will vie for a spot on the podium in the marathon.
Carmelo Anthony will try to earn his fourth medal as a member of Team USA as the Americans take one last shot at padding their lead in the gold medal count. Basketball isn’t the only team sport to draw to a close on the final day of events. Volleyball and handball will each crown champions on Sunday.
Combat sports may take a backseat to the day’s headlining team events, but 18 more medals will be awarded in the ring and on the mats before athletes start filing out of Brazil. Claressa Shields will vie to defend her gold medal in the women’s middleweight boxing final, while the men compete at flyweight, light welterweight, and the division that has produced gold medalists like Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko, the super heavyweight.
But the day’s big events start with Meb Keflezighi and Galen Rupp’s quest to bring a marathon medal back to the United States. Rupp won the U.S. trials in January and took silver in the 10k run at the 2012 London Games. Keflezighi won the silver at the 2004 marathon and won the 2014 Boston Marathon. At 41 years old, he may be nearing the end of his career as an elite runner, but there would no better way to go out than with Olympic gold.
