The closing ceremony for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics is scheduled for Sunday, August 21 at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The ceremony marks the end of this year’s Summer Games, which have been better than expected in some aspects ... and just as bad as expected in others.
Summer Olympics closing ceremony 2016: Start time, TV schedule and what to expect
The closing ceremony marks the end of this year’s Summer Olympics.
We can’t say everyone escaped unscathed, but a ton of medals have been handed out. The United States is completely dominating the overall medal count and gold medal count, which is fitting as the country has more total medals than any other and it’s not even close.
Sunday’s ceremony will be a grand show featuring some kind of cultural presentation from Brazil. It will also include closing remarks by Thomas Bach, the International Olympic Committee president, and the leader of the Games’ organizing committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman. Most importantly, it will feature the official handover of the Olympic flag from Rio mayor Eduardo Paes to Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike, as the city is pegged to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
It will also feature the extinguishing of the Olympic flame.
The opening ceremony wasn’t as grand a celebration as usual, and it reportedly only had one-tenth of the budget of London’s 2012 opening ceremony. It will be directed by the same creative team as the opening ceremony, including Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles and artist Rose Magalhães, known for being one of Brazil’s best Carnival festival designers.
The cultural performance will reportedly highlight Brazilian music and general culture and may run along the same lines that saw environmental issues highlighted in the opening ceremony.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. ET, but NBC will not carry it on television until an hour later. The live stream available via NBC Sports will also be delayed by an hour, and will only allow you to watch 30 minutes without logging into a cable or satellite TV provider. Below is all you need to watch the festivities.
