The United States’ Claressa Shields is the women’s middleweight boxing champion, winning gold on Sunday by beating the Netherlands’ Nouchka Fontijn in unanimous decision.
Olympic boxing 2016 results: Claressa Shields wins gold in women’s middleweight
Shields is the first American to win back-to-back gold medals in boxing.

Shields also won the gold in middleweight boxing in 2012, when she was only 17. She’s the first American man or woman to ever win back-to-back gold medals in boxing, and she’s the first American boxer in more than 100 years with two gold medals. Oliver Kirk won two gold medals in bantamweight and featherweight in the incredibly flawed 1904 Olympics.
The win improves Shields’ record to 77-1, and she hasn’t lost in more than four years. She dominated Fontijn on Sunday, showing her combination of quickness and power that makes her the best female fighter in the world, pound-for-pound.
