The Chargers want you to think they’re the good guys in the Joey Bosa standoff

As Joey Bosa’s holdout continues, the San Diego Chargers have issued a statement making it clear that the two parties are not any nearer to an agreement. The team has said that its most recent offer to Bosa was its best offer, but that it will be restructured as it is clear to the Chargers that their first-round pick will not play an entire 16-game season this year.

Bosa, the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, has missed all of training camp due to a failure to agree to terms with the team that selected him. In the statement released by the Chargers, the team said the terms they have offered Bosa were “both fair and structurally consistent with the contracts of every other Chargers player.”

The Chargers detailed the latest offer to Bosa in the statement.

Bosa’s representatives rejected the offer, and his holdout will continue. They released their own statement Wednesday night:

“It is unfortunate the San Diego Chargers have decided to manipulate facts and negotiate in the media. The team surely is not strengthening its relationship with Joey Bosa by taking this stance and making their position public,” the statement reads.

“We will say, that it is ironic that the team now takes issue with the timing of Joey’s arrival, since the Chargers unilaterally decided to remain silent for the first 14 days of training camp instead of replying in a timely fashion to the proposal we made on the eve of training camp on July 28th.”

One of the holdups in negotiations has been that Bosa’s side wants the Chargers to either pay the entirety of his signing bonus up front or to omit offset language that would keep the Chargers from having to pay out guaranteed money to Bosa should they choose to not pick up his fifth-year option.

Bosa wanted his full signing bonus paid before the end of the calendar year, and the Chargers wanted to delay payment of at least a portion of it until March 2017. As far as the offset language, Bosa wanted it to be excluded entirely, and while the Chargers do have a precedent for including offset language in player contracts, the team has not had a top-5 pick since the implementation of the current collective bargaining agreement.

The deadline to attempt to trade Bosa to another team has passed, so there are two possible outcomes to this situation. Bosa can still sign with the Chargers at any time between now and the Tuesday following Week 10 of the 2016 season, which falls on Nov. 15.

If that date passes, Bosa will have to sit out the remainder of the 2016 season, and he can re-enter the draft in 2017.
