The Cubs visited Vin Scully and it was like they were old friends catching up
This was sweet.
Before Friday’s Cubs-Dodgers game that ended in a 7-4 win for Chicago, Cubs manager Joe Maddon and catcher David Ross could not pass up the opportunity to talk to Vin Scully, who retiring by the end of the season. Of course, they brought over gifts during their visit: a “67” sign and a Dodgers flag from Wrigley Field, and an assortment of Cubs gear.
The best part, however, was the conversation the three of them had, like old friends that never lost touch (for Ross, this was true, since he started his career as a Dodger.) Even Maddon felt that way:
“Everybody says it, but he makes you feel like he’s known you for the last 50 years,” Maddon said.
Scully referenced Maddon’s recently-retired mom, who was also a topic of their conversation last year, while 39-year-old Ross dropped a truism about getting old, especially when it comes to being an athlete:
Scully: “Well, you began with us. I’m glad to see you ... I wish you’d play in your 50s.”
Ross: “I wish I could too, but I think ... well, the mama wants me home, the kids want me home, and the body — the body doesn’t take it anymore. But I’m enjoying the heck out of this year.”
With the Dodgers taking a funny and iconic, all-Scully-heads photo with their beloved broadcaster, Friday was pretty much a good day to be Vin Scully.
