Little League World Series scores and bracket 2016: New York, South Korea advance to championship game

New York and South Korea will play for the Little League World Series championship Sunday.

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

New York won the U.S. championship at the 2016 Little League World Series to set up a title game with International champion South Korea. The two teams won their respective championships Saturday and will play Sunday to decide the overall winner of this year’s tournament.

The team from Endwell, N.Y. outlasted the kids from Goodlettsville, Tenn. on Saturday, 4-2, to win the United States title, the first for New York since Staten Island in 1964. New York had a four-run lead with two outs in the sixth inning before Tennessee answered with a two-run home run, but the rally was short-lived.

New York is the only undefeated team left in the tournament, outscoring opponents so far 27-15 in their four games.

South Korean pitcher Youbin Choi was dominant on the mound in the International championship game. He struck out 14 hitters and spread six hits over six innings to limit Panama to just two runs. Once the offense packed on five runs in the second inning to blow the game open, Choi had no problem protecting the lead.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning before Korea’s second-inning outburst made it 6-1. Another run in the third inning extended the margin to six before Panama scored one more in the bottom off the fifth inning of the six-inning contest.

Seum Kwon, Jaekyeong Kim and Wontae Cho all hit home runs for South Korea. Kwon and Kim each hit two-run homers in the second inning, while Cho finished off the team’s scoring with the third-inning solo shot. Carlos Gonzalez recorded three of Panama’s six hits.

The Little League World Series championship game is set for 3 p.m. ET on Sunday. It will be broadcast live by ABC.
