David de la Cruz won Stage 9 as part of a 12-man breakaway Sunday to become the overall leader at the 2016 Vuelta a Espana. On Monday, he could struggle to retain the red jersey in Stage 10. Big name general classification contenders like Chris Froome, Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde will be jockeying to win what could be one of the most decisive stages of the grand tour, finishing at Lagos de Covadonga atop a hefty final climb.
Vuelta 2016 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch Stage 10 online with NBC Sports Gold
Stage 10 of the Vuelta of the Espana features the biggest, most decisive climb of the grand tour yet.

Stage 10 of the Vuelta will begin at 6:34 a.m. ET in Lugones. Universal HD will once again broadcast the stage beginning at 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. Live streaming is available with a subscription to NBC Sports Gold, which will show the stage beginning at 9 a.m. as well provide live updates and tracking.
The centerpiece of Stage 10 is the final climb. It’s more than 12 kilometers long with an elevation change of nearly 900 meters that it reaches with a 17 percent-graded jolt to the finish line. Before that, it’s 176 kilometers of transitional terrain and a solid Category 1 warmup at 140k mark. With Tuesday being a rest day, those last 12-plus kilometers should be the most intense racing of the Vuelta thus far.
Quintana, who entered Stage 9 in red, will be a favorite to take back the jersey. He appears to be in grand tour-winning form. Stage 10 should reveal who else possibly has the legs to compete with him, Froome especially. The 2016 Tour winner is cycling’s golden boy, but even he may have his limits, especially after a dedicated trip to Rio.
