2016 Olympic tennis: Bracket, schedule and scores for women’s competition

The 2016 Rio Olympics are here, and we’ve got the full bracket and schedule for the women’s singles competition in tennis.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

When Venus Williams went out in the opening round, the chance at a women’s singles title for the United States took a big hit. When Serena Williams was eliminated two rounds later, the chances for Olympic hardware at the 2016 Rio Olympics took a MASSIVE hit. The Williams sisters have essentially dominated play in the Olympics for years, but the pair simply had a rough go at it.

To make things worse, they also found themselves eliminated in doubles play. That was shocking, given the fact that the Williams sisters had never lost a doubles match in the Olympics.

So all hope was essentially lost. But Madison Keys, the No. 7 seed, was overlooked and she managed to make it all the way to the semifinals for the United States. Unfortunately, she lost to Angelique Kerber, the second seed in the tournament, and lost in her bronze medal match to Petra Kvitova.

Kerber, though, didn’t win gold as expected. She was beaten by the unseeded Monica Puig, who played some of the best tennis of her life to win gold, Puerto Rico’s first ever Olympic gold medal.
