Olympic tennis 2016: Bracket, schedule and scores for men’s competition

Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro will face off for singles gold in Rio.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The United States didn’t have much hopes at earning a medal in men’s play going into the 2016 Rio Olympics, especially when the pair of Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan dropped out due to health concerns. The Bryan Brothers were set to defend their doubles gold from the 2012 London Olympics, but when they backed out, the United States’ chances at a medal took a huge hit.

Fortunately, the team of Steve Johnson and Jack Sock, managed to earn a bronze medal on Friday at the Olympics, making it further than anyone expected of them. While the Bryan brothers would have been expected to earn gold, a bronze is much better than was expected out of Johnson and Sock.

Unfortunately, both Sock and Johnson were eliminated in singles play. Sock and two other American men were eliminated on the tournament’s first day, while Johnson made it all the way to the quarterfinals, where he fell to Andy Murray.

That put an end to the United States’ chances at a singles medal on the men’s side. In the finals, Andy Murray took down Juan Martin Del Potro in four sets, while Kei Nishikori bested Rafael Nadal in the bronze medal match.
