Team USA wins first gold medal of the 2016 Rio Olympics
Virginia Thrasher won the women’s 10-meter air rifle event to become the first hero for Team USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

United States: 1
Literally all other nations in the world: 0
With a score of 208.0, Thrasher just barely edged out China’s Du Li, who scored 207.0. Yi Siling, also from China, took bronze with a score of 185.4.
Thrasher may be young, but she’s accomplished. She recently won two individual NCAA titles in air rifle and smallbore for West Virginia University (Go ‘Eers!) as a freshman. She made the United States national team in 2015 with a strong performance at the 2015 U.S. championships. According to her Team USA profile, she holds more than 20 USA Shooting and National Rifle Association records.
Congrats to Thrasher for lead Team USA’s charge in Rio. I think I speak for everyone when I say, *ahem*: USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA.
