Olympics 2016, swimming results: United States picks up 3 silver medals
The United States earned three swimming silver medals on the first day of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

American Chase Kalisz took second place in the men’s 400-meter individual medley race. Kalisz said in the post-race interview that he knew he would start the race behind and that he’d have to gain it back in the second 200 meters, but Kosuke Hagino of Japan held on and took the first swimming gold medal of the Olympics. Daiya Seto of Japan finished third, getting the bronze medal.
Connor Jaeger and Conor Dwyer represented the U.S. in the 400-meter freestyle finals, but unfortunately neither of them earned a medal. Dwyer finished fourth and Jaeger finished fifth, while Mack Horton of Australia took the gold medal, Sun Yang of China won the silver medal and Gabriele Detti of Italy took the bronze.
Madeline DiRado and Elizabeth Beisel of the U.S. took part in the women’s 400-meter individual medley finals on Saturday, with DiRado finishing in second for a silver medal. DiRado was actually ahead of the world record pace for much of her run, but she was still well behind Katinka Hosszú of Hungary, who shattered the previous world record by more than two seconds to take gold in the event.
Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain took the bronze medal in the event.
The final medal event of the day was the 4x100-meter freestyle relay swimming competition. The finals saw Japan, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, United States, Italy, Sweden, France, China and Russia competing. The U.S. squad was made up of Simone Manuel, Abbey Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer and Katie Ledecky.
That squad finished second in the relay, taking the silver medal behind Australia. It was neck-and-neck for much of the relay, but Australia pulled ahead in the final two legs and managed to break the world record. The bronze medal went to Canada.
