Serena Williams is the best hope for the United States to earn a gold medal in tennis. After the fall of three out of four American men on the very first day of singles play on Saturday, even more eyes will be on Williams. The men were never expected to seriously compete for a gold medal, but the opening day was still a disappointment for sure.

Williams is the defending gold medalist, having won the singles competition at the 2012 London Olympics. She is also the most dominant player in tennis today, and on Sunday will play her opening round match against Daria Gavrilova. That match will be the second played on Centre Court, which gets play started with a match between Dustin Brown and Thomas Bellucci at 9:45 a.m. ET.
Williams will also be in action a second time on the day, in doubles action alongside sister Venus Williams. They will face a tough team, the pairing of Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova. The Williams sisters are also defending champions in the women’s doubles bracket, having claimed the gold in London.
Men’s doubles also had high expectations for the US, before Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan dropped out of the Olympics over health concerns. Now the team of Rajeev Ram and Brian Baker will be in action in their first-round doubles match against the imposing French team of Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
France is heavily favored to earn the men’s doubles gold, with that team and the top-seeded Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the tournament. On Saturday, all of Jack Sock, Denis Kudla and Brian Baker lost their singles matches for the US. Steve Johnson is the lone American man into the second round.
Top men’s seeds Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal will all be in singles action on Sunday. Djokovic has the toughest opening match, as he’ll play Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, an inconsistent player who once won the US Open. At his best, del Potro can push Djokovic to the limits so it should be a good one to watch.
