2016 Rio Olympic gymnastic results: Simone Biles, United States completely dominate women’s qualifying

The United States completely and utterly dominated the women’s gymnastics qualifications on Sunday. The country finished 10 points above the next-best country (China) with a total score of 185.238 after running through all of the floor exercise, vault, uneven bars and balance beam.

The most competition on Sunday wasn’t between the United States and another country, it was between three American women in the all-around competition. Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas were all performing exceptionally well, but only two from each team are allowed to compete in the all-around finals.

With only the balance beam to go, Biles led with Raisman just barely on top of Douglas, a .476-point lead. Douglas scored a 14.833 on her balance beam attempt, meaning Raisman needed a 14.358 to get the all-around spot. She got that and more, scoring 14.833 on her balance beam attempt.

Biles was already safe, but she turned in an incredible performance and posted a 15.633. She ended up with the top score on three of four events. Biles, Raisman and Douglas finished first, second and third in all-around competition, but Douglas did not advance due to the rules.

Making her Olympic debut, Biles wowed in the floor routine, putting up scores of 15.733 and 15.867, easily finishing on top of the standings. Raisman wound up just behind her in second. Unlike the world championship events leading up to the Olympics, scores from qualification rounds will not carry over into the finals, and they’ll have to do it all again to win some hardware.

With one more subdivision to go, the top eight after Sunday’s subdivision four was the United States, China, Russia, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy, in that order.
