2016 Olympics medal count: Swimmers put Team USA on top after three days

A big showing in the pool on Monday night gave the United States the medal lead at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Japan took down the biggest team event of day three at the 2016 Olympics, but Team USA stood tallest after individual swimming events wrapped up in the evening.

Americans won two gold medals and six medals in four finals on Monday night. When it comes to the pool, the team already has 14 medals -- or as many as the next six most successful countries combined. That dominance helped push the U.S. to the medal lead with 19 platform appearances in only three days of competition. China, with five gold medals and 13 total, currently ranks second.

Japan earned team gold in men’s gymnastics, besting Russia and China for the top spot. The U.S. team finished a disappointing fifth in the team all-around.

China took an early lead in the count thanks to a gold medal in men's 10-meter synchronized diving, where the US team of David Boudia and Steele Johnson took silver. China's Chen Aisen and Lin Yue dominated, scoring 496.98 to Boudia and Johnson's 457.11.

Colombia added its name to the ledger of gold medal winners when 62kg weightlifter Oscar Figueroa took home first place in his discipline. Despite an impressive performance, he was outshined by 58kg Thai female Sukanya Srisurat, who set an Olympic record with a total weight of 240kg.

Elite shooting performances also sent golds to Croatia (Josip Glasnovic, men’s trap) and Italy (Niccolo Campriani, men’s 10m air rifle).

Finally, Australia kicked off its day three by winning the Games’ first rugby gold medal since 1924. The Aussie women prevailed in an all-Oceania showdown against New Zealand in a tight 24-17 rugby sevens victory. The Kiwis settled for second while Canada blew the doors off Great Britain, 33-10, to claim bronze.
