United States’ oldest Olympian, Phillip Dutton, wins bronze in individual eventing

Phillip Dutton, competing in his sixth Olympic games but only his third for Team USA, finally won his first medal in individual eventing.

James Lang-USA TODAY Sports

At 52 years old, Phillip Dutton is the United States’ oldest Olympian. The Rio Olympics were his sixth Games. On Tuesday he did something he has never done: Win an individual medal in equestrian.

Riding a horse named Mighty Nice, Dutton took the bronze medal with a score of 51.80, behind Astier Nicolas of France, silver at 48.00, and Michael Jung of Germany, gold at 40.90.

Dutton has a unique Olympic history. Born in New South Wales in Australia, he competed as an Australian in the 1996 Atlanta Games, 2000 Sydney Games and 2004 Athens Games. He won gold medals in team eventing in 1996 and 2000. Dutton became a naturalized United States citizen in 2006, at which point he began competing as an American. Sunday’s medal was his first as a member of Team USA.

Jung posted a near unbeatable score while riding Sam FBW, to win his second consecutive gold.
