2016 Olympic swimming: Michael Phelps added to USA’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay team
Phelps will have the opportunity to win another gold with a spot on America’s freestyle relay squad.
Phelps will join fellow veteran superstar Ryan Lochte, 2016 200-meter freestyle bronze medalist Conor Dwyer, and Townley Haas on the U.S. squad. Lochte is the only member of the team to have swum in the semifinals, where the team placed second in the penultimate round of heats. Lochte will swim third for the Americans, while Phelps will hold down the anchor leg.
The prolific swimmer has been a part of USA Swimming’s gold medal efforts in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at each of the past three Olympics. He’ll have his hands full on Tuesday night. It was his preparation for that race that gave us the Games’ greatest meme to date.
The men’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay final is set to start at 10:38 p.m. ET.
