Serena Williams crumbles with unforced errors in early exit from Rio

One bad day followed another for Serena.

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Serena Williams’ run in Olympic tennis this year was a short one.

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina beat Williams in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday in straight sets, knocking the game’s top player out of the singles tournament. She’d already lost in doubles with sister Venus Williams, falling together in Olympic doubles for the first time ever on Sunday. The singles loss on Tuesday compounds a tough go of things in Rio for Serena.

The Williams sisters have been dominant for years, including in the Olympics. But this wasn’t a good week, and Serena’s troubles on Tuesday were significant. She had problems with double faults and wasn’t able to string together enough points against a capable opponent in Svitolina. And now, unfortunately, she’s out.
