Olympic swimming results 2016: USA wins gold in men’s 4x200m freestyle relay
The Americans took home gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay on Tuesday night.
Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte swam together for what may have been their final time, but they made their last Olympic effort count. The pair teamed with Conor Dwyer and Townley Haas to deliver USA Swimming’s fourth straight gold medal in the relay. The team, anchored by Phelps, trailed only briefly before winning by nearly 2.5 seconds at the finish.
Lochte was the only member of the team to swim earlier in the event’s semifinals. Phelps, Dwyer and Haas were added to the squad before the finals, where their fresh bodies and strong showings earlier in these Games gave the U.S. a boost.
America hasn’t lost the relay in an Olympics since 2000. Phelps has been a member of all four teams, dating back to the Athens games. The gold was his second of the night and 21st in his career. His first came in a memorable showdown where he bested rivals Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh in the 200m butterfly approximately one hour before returning for the relay.
