Nathan Adrian won the first men’s 100-meter freestyle semifinal heat from Lane 8 with a time of 47.83 seconds to advance to the final. He edged out Australia’s Cameron McEvoy, who appeared to have the semifinal won if not for a late surge by Adrian. Adrian’s Team USA teammate Caeleb Dressel took fifth overall in the semifinal with a time of 47.97 seconds.

Nathan Adrian and Caeleb Dressel will represent Team USA in the men’s 100-meter freestyle final in Rio.

Adrian’s performance was surprising given how poorly he performed in the heats. He barely qualified for the semifinals, taking the last spot with a time of 48.58 seconds. He and Dressel will be Team USA’s only two representatives in the final.
Joining Adrian and Dressel will be McEvoy (47.93 seconds), fellow Aussie Kyle Chalmers (47.88), Canada’s Santo Condorelli (47.93), Belgium’s Pieter Timmers (48.14), Great Britain’s Duncan Scott (48.20) and Brazil’s Marcelo Chierighini (48.23).
Adrian is no stranger to the podium, having won four Olympic gold medals and one silver at 27 years old.
