Katinka Hosszú of Hungary won gold in the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the 2016 Rio Olympics with a time of 2:06.68, setting an Olympic record. She edged out Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, who took silver and won Great Britain’s first-ever medal in the event. Madeline Dirado of the United States won bronze.

Katinka Hosszú of Hungary won the the women’s 200-meter individual medley for her third gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.


O’Connor entered with easily the best time from the semifinals, going 2:07.57 to advance. In her semifinal, she finished a full 1.34 seconds ahead of the second-best time of Dirado. Hosszú was the ostensible favorite, however, after taking gold in the women’s 100-meter backstroke and 400-meter individual medley earlier this Olympics.
Dirado and Melanie Margalis made up Team USA’s contingent in the final. Margalis, who finished fourth, was competing in her only event. Dirado already had a silver medal from the 400-meter individual medley final on Saturday.
O’Connor, just 20 years old, was competing in her first Olympics ever. She was already a decorated swimmer before Rio, however. In 2015, she won a world championship in the 4x100-meter mixed medley and took third in the 200-meter individual medley.
