After a year of illness and accidents, the world’s top-ranked golfer was carted off the course in Indianapolis after just eight holes Sunday afternoon.

Just a couple weeks after his wife, Ellie, and two children were lucky to walk away from a horrible traffic accident, Jason Day has withdrawn from the BMW Championship in Indianapolis after just eight holes on Sunday with a back injury. It’s just another in the long line of illnesses and small injuries that have plagued Day’s 2016 season -- even as he’s sat atop the FedExCup standings and Official World Golf Rankings for most of the year.
It’s too early to know if Day will be in the field in two weeks at the Tour Championship, but if he is, he’ll still be primed for a chance to take home the FedExCup title. He’s currently projected to be sitting 3rd in FedExCup points — only trailing Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed. Everyone coming to Atlanta in the Top 5 in the FedExCup standings has an opportunity to win the $10 million dollar prize outright with a win.
Dustin Johnson currently leads Paul Casey by one in Indianapolis halfway through the front nine on Sunday.
