Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 6 interceptions in the worst passing performance of the NFL season

Ryan Fitzpatrick had BY FAR the worst passing day of any starting quarterback this season.

Ryan Fitzpatrick had a bafflingly bad day against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. His final line — 20 for 44 passing for 188 yards and six (!) interceptions to zero touchdowns. His day was capped by this fourth-quarter interception returned for a score.

Perhaps the strangest thing about Fitzpatrick’s awful day is that he is coming off a 10-day rest and an incredible outing against a supposedly stout Buffalo Bills defense. Against the Bills, he went 24-for-34 passing for 374 yards and one score. His 116.5 passer rating was the 10th best by any quarterback who played significant snaps in any NFL game this season. His 18.2 rating this game was by FAR the worst.

In a nut shell, Fitzpatrick’s last two weeks explain his contentious offseason with the Jets pretty well. Against the Bills, he looked like the savvy passer whose re-signing his receivers campaigned for. Against the Chiefs, he looked like the overmatched passer whom the Jets were loathe to sign until the last possible moment.

Good or bad, Fitzpatrick and the Jets are stuck with each other. Let the soul searching begin.
