This A’s ballboy gets an A for effort, and an F for deflecting a foul ball toward a player’s head
The positive: This A’s ballboy did his damnedest to catch a foul ball and save a couple players from getting hit. His dive is heroic and should be commended.
The negative: He did not catch the ball. In fact, the ball bounced off the wall and hit Chris Smith, who tried to protect himself with a towel, right on the noggin. Smith playfully got angry at the ballboy for missing the catch by throwing his towel on the ground.
Ballboy Scott Masler explained to Cut4 what happened that caused him to miss:
“The sun is really bright at the Coliseum during that time of day, so the ball kind of blends in a little bit. It also took a bad hop. Nine times out of 10, I make that play. I’m still pretty upset I didn’t make the play.”
