Hey, we told you Justin Thomas would likely be in contention this week at the Sony Open in Hawaii. There’s no one not named Hideki Matsuyama in the world that’s playing as well as the Kentucky native. But following up but winning back-to-back events and three times in five starts on tour? That’s incredibly difficult stuff.

Well, about that.

You can’t win a tournament on Thursday, but Thomas is well on his way in Oahu — and made some history in the process.

Thomas became the youngest player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59 on Thursday, making eagle on the par-five ninth, his final hole, to reach the vaunted mark.

Playing alongside good friends and fellow young stars Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger, Thomas took it deep early, racing out to nine-under through his first 13 holes and putting the golf world on 59 Watch. He only needed two birdies over the course of his final five holes to become the seventh player in Tour history to go sub-60.

Or, say, just one eagle.

One slid just over the lip on his 14th hole.

And yet another on the 16th.

That left making eagle on the reachable par-five ninth (Thomas started on the back nine) as his final opportunity to reach golf’s Holy Grail number. After driving it in the bunker off the tee, Thomas hit a brilliant short-iron from the sand to 15 feet for the opportunity at history.

Thomas sits five shots clear of Russell Henley and others, though it’s still early in Hawaii and plenty of rounds are still to finish.
