Texans take 1st step to fix offense by parting ways with OC George Godsey

Houston’s offense was abysmal in 2016, and the team is looking for a change.

The Houston Texans announced Monday they have mutually agreed to part ways with offensive coordinator George Godsey.

“I’m grateful for the tireless work ethic and contributions George has made to our team over the last three years,” said Texans head coach Bill O’Brien. “I wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Following a season in which the team made the playoffs despite having an offense ranked No. 29 in the league in scoring, total yards, and passing yards, the Texans offense needs some change. O’Brien demonstrated a lack of confidence in Godsey early this season, when he took over play calling duties from Godsey after the Texans were shut out 27-0 by the Patriots in Week 3.

The Texans won the AFC South for the second straight season on the strength of their top-ranked defense. After a win over the Oakland Raiders (minus quarterback Derek Carr) in the Wild Card Round, the Texans fell to the New England Patriots in divisional play with a final score of 34-16.

Prior to the 2016 season, the Texans signed quarterback Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million contract with $37 million guaranteed. Osweiler struggled all season, as did the entire Texans offense.

Osweiler was benched for backup Tom Savage in Week 15 of the regular season, but returned as the starter for the Wild Card Round as Savage was sidelined with a concussion. Osweiler also got the start against the Patriots and finished the game 23-of-40 for 198 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

O’Brien was noncommittal about whether Houston plans to pursue a different quarterback in the draft.

“We’re so far from answering that question,” O’Brien said. “Right now, we sit down and evaluate our team and everything we do ... it’s not even a question that I can begin to answer.”

The Texans finished the 2016 season 9-7 and will look to establish some offensive consistency next season under Godsey’s replacement.
