49ers owe $69 million to the coaches they’ve fired

Nice. Jed York is blowing through his inheritance as fast as he’s turning away fans.

The 49ers are going to have to shell out a lot of money to coaches who don’t work there anymore. As a matter of fact, they’re going to be paying out $69 million to people who don’t even work there anymore, according to Adam Schefter.

Schefter said it on a live TV segment Monday morning.

They fired head coach Chip Kelly this weekend after just one year on the job. It’s the same thing they did this time last year when they fired Jim Tomsula after just one year on the job. They fired Jim Harbaugh the year before that, but he actually lasted four years and was pretty successful.

Tomsula signed a four-year, $14 million deal with the 49ers, so they’re still on the hook for $7 million to him.

Kelly signed a four-year, $24 million deal with the 49ers last year, so he’s still owed three years of that, roughly $18 million.

Kelly is double-dipping in 2017 thanks to the last deal he signed with the Eagles when he was fired two years into a five-year deal. That contract was worth $32.5 million, so he’s due $6.5 million from the Eagles this year.

We should note that these numbers all depend on the buyout deals worked out behind the scenes, but you get the idea.

The good news for the 49ers’ next head coach is that Jed York is still the team’s CEO. If they can get the job, they might only have to put up with one year, one awful season of all the front-office politics and in-fighting that go along with working at the behest of a silver-spooned man child intent on blowing through his near-limitless inheritance and squandering the good will of what’s left of the fan base.

Survive one year of that, and cash in!
