Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic Sunday morning, according to Cristian Moreno of ESPN.

The report was confirmed by the Kansas City Royals, according to Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star.
Ventura, who was 25 years old, was with the Royals since 2013. During his time with the organization, he went 38-31 with a 3.89 ERA, 470 strikeouts, and a 1.34 WHIP. In 2014, Ventura helped the Royals win the AL pennant. The next season, Kansas City and Ventura went on to win the World Series over the New York Mets.
In 2016, Ventura went 11-12 with a 4.45 ERA. He collected 144 strikeouts and posted a 1.44 WHIP.
Ventura signed with the Royals in 2008 as an international free agent and spent the next five years being groomed in the minor leagues. During those years, he went 20-25 with a 3.48 ERA. He struck out 464 batters and had a 1.255 WHIP.
The report of Ventura’s death came just hours after the news that former MLB player Andy Marte was killed in a separate car accident. Though both accidents happened in the Dominican Republic, authorities have confirmed they are unrelated.
