Victor Cruz says the Giants’ boat trip ‘definitely wasn’t worth it’

Cruz was adamant a boat ride wasn’t the reason why New York lost, however.

The New York Giants courted controversy when a handful of the team’s most important offensive players showed up on a boat in Miami hours after beating Washington in Week 17. Odell Beckham Jr. was there. So were Trey Songs and Justin Bieber, for some reason.

Six days later, that crew wound up on the unpleasant side of a 38-13 drubbing against the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs. On Monday, wide receiver Victor Cruz addressed the now-infamous 24-hour trip on SportsNet New York reporter Taylor Rooks’ podcast.

“It definitely wasn’t worth it,” Cruz reflected. “At the end of the day, you want to put your mind in a place where you want to success at wherever your next task is, especially in a football setting.”

But Cruz wasn’t exactly deferring to critics who roasted the team after the postgame trip.

“Granted, it’s New Years Day,” he mused with a hint of bitterness in his voice. “And you’re an adult. And you pay your own bills. And it’s an off day, so you just want to go out and enjoy yourself.”

He also made sure everyone knew the reason New York lost its Wild Card showdown in Green Bay had nothing to do with a trip to South Beach.

“The game didn’t turn out the way we wanted. It had nothing to do with Miami,” he assured listeners. “When you lose, [the New York media] going to find those things to pinpoint and blame.”

Cruz’s quarterback, Eli Manning, certainly wasn’t bothered by the trip. He used the non-story to bust out a pair of rock solid dad jokes to the media.
