It sucks when your favorite team loses. It’s definitely not serious enough to justify setting yourself on fire, as one Florida man did after losing a bet with his wife that the Cowboys would beat the Packers.
Florida man suffers 3rd-degree burns after losing bet on Packers-Cowboys
He set his Cowboys jersey on fire and then tried to wear it. Bad idea.

The couple made a bet and established that the loser would burn their team’s jersey. The Packers did win an instant classic over the Cowboys on yet another last-minute touchdown drive led by Aaron Rodgers.
The 27-year-old man set his Cowboys jersey on fire, but then tried to put it on while it was burning. The man had to be rushed to the hospital with third-degree burns, which is truly awful.
At the hospital, deputies spoke with a couple who admitted they were watching the NFL game and agreed to burn the losing team’s jersey. However, the man decided to wear the jersey as it was burning.
A witness told Sebastian Daily, “He was set on fire after losing a bet on the Cowboys game … Skin was hanging off his arm and back.”
The man suffered third-degree burns on his right arm and right hand and second-degree burns to his back.
There are all kinds of bad ideas coming into play here. For future reference, here’s a handy list of things to avoid as a sports fan.
- Don’t make bets with your spouse or significant other. They’ll never let you live it down if you lose.
- Don’t set jerseys on fire.
- Don’t set yourself on fire.
- Don’t set anyone or anything else on fire.
- Don’t try to wear something that is already on fire.
It’s not fun when your team loses. It’s a lot less fun when you land in the hospital recovering from third-degree burns because you tried to wear a burning jersey.
