Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s suspension is the latest twist in the Giants’ meltdown

The New York Giants suspended cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on Wednesday after he came into the team’s facility and then decided to leave.

On Thursday, Rodgers-Cromartie met with McAdoo, who has decided to suspend the cornerback without pay “indefintely.” However, under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, Rodgers-Cromartie’s suspension can’t last longer than four games, according to Ian Rapoport.

It likely won’t even come close to that mark with McAdoo and Rodgers-Cromartie set to meet Monday and possibly end the suspension in time for the cornerback to return in Week 7.

Head coach Ben McAdoo announced the suspension when he talked to reporters on Wednesday afternoon:

“DRC came in yesterday, we had a conversation that was personal upstairs,” McAdoo told reporters. “He came in today, decided to leave. We will suspend him.” McAdoo refused to answer any questions beyond that.

But on the Sunday Night Football broadcast, Al Michaels said that McAdoo told the NBC crew that four different incidents led to the suspension.

According to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano, McAdoo told Rodgers-Cromartie‏ on Tuesday that he wouldn’t play Sunday night against the Denver Broncos. Rodgers-Cromartie left before team meetings on Wednesday, which led to the suspension.

The suspension came as a surprise to his teammates, and Landon Collins hinted at what might have caused the situation:

Rodgers-Cromartie left the team’s game against the Chargers on Sunday with a left leg injury, though he was not placed on the injury report.

Eli Apple is the next man up in Rodgers-Cromartie’s absence, but he hasn’t been too happy as of late himself:

After the game, Apple said: “You lose games and it’s got to be someone else’s problem, so they look around and think, ‘OK, this is the problem.’ But it’s not just one guy, it’s the whole culture, it’s everything. We’ve got to fix it.”

The past few days have been as close as you can get to a dumpster fire for the Giants. On Sunday, they lost their top three wideouts in Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, and Sterling Shepard due to injuries. Beckham and Marshall are both out for the remainder of the season, while Shepard is day to day, leaving the team thin at the position.

All of this leaves the 0-5 Giants shorthanded going into Denver this week to face the NFL’s top defense. After their bye week the following week, they get to welcome the Seattle Seahawks to town.
