The Suns’ 48-point loss was somehow worse than the final score

Phoenix had the worst opening night loss in NBA history and the worst loss in their history ... at home.

After drafting Josh Jackson No. 4 overall this summer and adding him to an ostensibly promising group of Devin Booker, Marquese Chriss, and Dragan Bender, the Phoenix Suns lost their season opener to the Portland Trail Blazers by 48 points in front of their home crowd. It could have been worse: They were down as many as 58. Some consolation.

Phoenix’s awful Wednesday night marked the worst season-opening loss in NBA history, according to Basketball-Reference, eclipsing the Nuggets’ 46-point blowout win over the Clippers in 1987.

It was also the worst loss in Phoenix Suns history.

To make matters worse, they lost to the Trail Blazers without C.J. McCollum, who was serving a one-game suspension. So naturally, Evan Turner was a plus-43 in 25 minutes and Pat Connaughton scored 24 points on 64 percent shooting off the bench. Wrap your head around that one.

So to recap: The promising young Suns set an NBA record with the worst loss ever on opening night and the worst loss in their franchise history ... to a Trail Blazers team without its second-best player. At home.

It’s safe to say Suns fans were not happy:

Are the Suns tanking already?

It should be way too early to start the tank train. But is it ever too early to start the tank train?

Phoenix just lost by a hair under half-a-hundred to start its regular season, and it probably doesn’t get much easier than at home against Portland without McCollum. Not in the Western Conference. According to Bright Side of the Sun’s Evan Sidery, a group of fans started chanting Marvin Bagley’s name. If you don’t already know, Bagley is a projected top-two pick in the upcoming draft.

This line from Bright Side’s Dave King sums up Phoenix’s night:

That was the worst basketball I may have ever seen at a Suns home game and I have seen a lot of bad basketball.

And if the Phoenix Suns are already looking forward to next season, well then this tweet probably sums everything up:
