Ndamukong Suh said he was protecting himself when he grabbed Ryan Mallett by the throat

William Hayes also poked a Ravens player in the eye.

Everything that could go wrong for the Miami Dolphins did on Thursday night and the frustration boiled over for most of the second half. Late in the game, Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh earned a penalty for grabbing Baltimore Ravens quarterback Ryan Mallett by the throat.

According to Chris Perkins of the Sun-Sentinel, Suh said he did that out of self defense. “Simple as this,” Suh said, “He came at me and tried to attack me, and I’m protecting myself.” Suh also doesn’t regret his actions. “I’m never going to regret protecting myself,” he said.

Mallett played the entire second half after replacing Joe Flacco in the final minutes of the second quarter. Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso delivered a hellacious late hit that concussed Flacco and angered many Ravens players, as well as Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh.

The Ravens led 13-0 at the time Mallett entered the game and 20-0 at halftime, and remained well in control for the rest of the game. However, there were plenty of scuffles between the two teams after the hit on Flacco.

Suh was in the middle of many of those moments, but his reach for Mallett’s throat was the one moment where he crossed a line and will likely face a hefty fine from the NFL as a consequence.

He is not expected to be suspended, however:

Ultimately though, his penalty was declined and one was instead assessed on William Hayes for poking a Ravens offensive lineman in the eye.

With tempers flaring, the end of this game can’t come soon enough for the Dolphins.
