Ben Roethlisberger wonders if he ‘doesn’t have it anymore’

He was being sarcastic, but the frustration was palpable.

Ben Roethlisberger had a terrible day. Worse than that, really. He threw five interceptions in a 30-9 loss to the Jaguars in Pittsburgh. He became the first quarterback in history with more than 50 pass attempts, no touchdowns and five picks.

After the game, he was understandably frustrated. Big Ben turned some heads with one particular comment though, telling reporters gathered around him that “maybe I don’t have it anymore.”

When asked about that statement, he added, “I’m not playing well enough.”

His words were the product of a quarterback and a team grasping for answers vs. signing off on his career. Still, those aren’t the kind of self-deprecating words you’re used to hearing from Roethlisberger. They’re bound to raise an eyebrow too because of his dalliance with the possibility of retirement during the offseason.

The entire Steelers offense is a mystery right now. Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are healthy, and so is Roethlisberger. But a team that used to reliably put up 30 points with ease is struggling to score.

He’s not playing well, but it’s not the only problem the Steelers offense is having. Watching them line up on third downs in short yardage situations with empty backfields might explain part of why they’re stuck at scoring just under 20 points per game this season.
