It looks like it’s about time to stick a fork in the 2017 Dolphins after the Panthers destroyed them 45-21 on Monday Night Football. They’re done. But Jay Cutler doesn’t see it that way.

“There’s a lot of football left. The pieces are in that locker room. I truly believe that,” Cutler said, via Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. “I have been around a lot of good teams, there [are] a lot of good guys in there, a lot of talent. And there’s really good coaches.
“So we just have to get back to work. That’s the only thing we can do. We can’t fold up shop because there’s a lot of football left to play and anything can happen.”
Cutler wasn’t alone. Center Mike Pouncey agreed.
“We’re good,” Pouncey said. “You’ve just got to regroup. We still control our own destiny. It’s just we’ve got to win these kinds of football games. It’s the second half of the season and we can’t lose these kinds of games. We just put ourselves in a deeper hole, but we’re going to keep working hard and we’re going to get us a win next week.”
The Dolphins haven’t been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but they’re sitting at 4-4 and trail the Patriots and Bills in the AFC East. If the season ended today, they would be stuck on the outside looking in. Miami’s in line behind both the Ravens and the Raiders right now for a shot at a wildcard spot this postseason.
The Dolphins have lost three in a row. One of those defeats was a 40-0 shutout against the Ravens, who are 4-5 and averaging 21.1 points per game this year. Opponents have outscored Miami 112-45 over the past three games.
The Dolphins have also had the good fortune to avoid games against the Patriots and Bills so far this season. That bad news is that they still have two games against each of those division rivals left on the schedule. They also have the 6-3 Chiefs looming.
And they don’t even have a bye week to regroup. The league had to reschedule Miami’s Week 1 matchup against the Buccaneers because of Hurricane Irma and flipped both teams’ byes to the first week of the season instead.
Cutler’s saying all the right things. But there’s not much reason for hope after the Dolphins’ Monday night’s loss.
