The Broncos will make yet another change at quarterback for Week 12. Brock Osweiler will join Trevor Siemian on the sideline, and Paxton Lynch will get the start against the Raiders.

Denver drafted Lynch in the first round of the 2016 draft. He started two games for the Broncos last year and went 49 of 83 for 497 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick. He was healthy enough to play in the preseason and completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 90 yards, no touchdowns, and no picks.

An official announcement from the team is expected Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

Why are the Broncos switching to Lynch? Quarterback play has been a liability for the Broncos all season. Trevor Siemian began the year as the Broncos’ starter, but he threw nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions over seven games. The team decided to roll with the backup who got them to a Super Bowl after the 2015 season, Brock Osweiler.

They did not get the outcome they wanted with Osweiler. In three starts, he finished with 701 yards, three touchdowns, and four picks. So now they’ll turn to Lynch in hopes that he can limit mistakes and help the team improve on its 3-7 record.

Why did they wait so long to start Lynch? Lynch hasn’t been fully healthy. He was dealing with a shoulder sprain at the beginning of the season, but he remained on the injury report until late October.

Now he’s ready to play. And the team is ready for a fresh start after it moved on from offensive coordinator Mike McCoy after Sunday’s loss to the Bengals. Starting Lynch now, provided he’s able to stay healthy, should give the team an extended look at the second-year player they hope can assume the franchise quarterback role long-term.
