Sergey Kovalev made a successful return to the boxing ring on Saturday, beating Vyacheslav Shabranskyy with a second-round knockout to win the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship. It was a dominant performance on the HBO card from Kovalev, who was coming off his first two career losses, both to Andre Ward, who is now retired.
Kovalev vs. Shabranskyy results: Card winners, reaction, and analysis
Sergey Kovalev made a successful return to the boxing ring on Saturday, dominating his opponent en route to a second-round knockout.

Kovalev came out firing, immediately landing big jabs and body shots before setting up the huge right cross that sent Shabranskyy to the mat not once, but twice in the very first round. Shabranskyy landed exactly one effective strike in the round, a big shot to the chest, but Kovalev was dealing by then.
He scored another knockdown early in the second, again after setting up the right cross with the lengthy jab. The referee asked Shabranskyy if he was fine twice, and he said yes. The fight was quickly stopped not too long after that, before another knockdown could happen when Kovalev was swarming his opponent
For Kovalev, it’s a huge relief. Shabranskyy was the underdog, but a serious threat on paper, but one who didn’t even cause him to break a sweat in reality. If Kovalev has any self-doubt following his losses to Ward, Saturday’s fight should help him, though he will need to clean up his defense as he ate some big shots from Shabranskyy while his guard was down.
Yuriorkis Gamboa took Saturday’s bout against Jason Sosa on short notice, and badly needed a win. He got it in the first televised bout of the card, but it was not without controversy. It was a 10-round majority decision win over Sosa in a 130-pound bout, and it’s hard to see the argument for Sosa winning the bout.
One judge had the fight 94-94, and the other two had it 95-93 and 96-92 in favor of Gamboa. The folks over at Bad Left Hook scored the bout 95-93 and 96-92 for Sosa, who controlled most of the fight and scored a big knockdown in the seventh round. That knockdown came off a left hook to the top of the head. Gamboa also had a point taken away in the 10th round following dozens of warning from the referee.
Sosa, 29, has now lost two consecutive fights and will go back to the drawing board. He’ll get some leeway with the fight being on short notice.
The second televised bout saw Sullivan Barrera dominate Felix Valera in a thrilling contest. It surprisingly went to the judges despite both of these guys focused on scoring the knockout. It was a foul-filled fight, with multiple points taken away from Valera for low blows and one taken away from Barrera as well. Still, it was a hugely entertaining contest and Barrera is definitely on the up-and-up in the light heavyweight division.
Below is the play-by-play from the two rounds of the main event, followed by the full results from the card.
Sergey Kovalev def. Vyacheslav Shabranskyy via TKO in Round 2
Round 2: Shabranskyy is checked out by the doctors and given the all-clear. Kovalev comes very close to landing the right cross early in the round, but he needs to set it up with the jab first. He starts jabbing, landing two big right jabs from range. They exchange, and Kovalev secures his third knockdown, sending Shabranskyy to the mat with another big right hand. The referee asks twice if Shabranskyy is alright, and he says yes. Kovalev swarms, landing two big straights, a short uppercut and before he can send Shabranskyy to the mat again, the referee steps in and stops the fight.
Round 1: Kovalev lands some hard straight shots to start the round, and he’s immediately working the body while keeping his guard low. He certainly doesn’t look tentative, standing and trading right in front of Shabranskyy. It’s not all offense though, as Shabranskyy lands a hard shot to the chest that sends Kovalev backwards. But Kovalev responds with a big body shot and a massive hook that lands flush on the face and sends Shabranskyy down to the ground briefly! They exchange a little bit more and Kovalev lands another big right cross and short uppercut and Shabranskyy is down again! He gets up at eight on the count and the first round comes to an end.
