Eli Manning is 7th quarterback to eclipse 50,000 career passing yards

Eli Manning hasn’t missed a single game since he took over the reins as a starter for the New York Giants in his rookie season. Now, the two-time Super Bowl MVP is one of only seven quarterbacks with more than 50,000 passing yards.

Manning, 36, entered Week 9’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams with 186 yards remaining to reach 50,000 yards passing. He crossed the mark in the fourth quarter with a long pass to Sterling Shepard, although it came in what is going to turn out to be a blowout loss.

The only other quarterbacks to hit this milestone are Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Dan Marino, and John Elway. Three of those passers are in the Hall of Fame, and the other three are locks to get in when they are eligible.

If Manning remains healthy, he has a strong chance at topping Elway’s 51,475 career passing yards before the end of the 2017 season to move into sixth place.

But the milestone also comes when his time with the Giants may be coming close to an end. The Giants started the season 1-6 and likely need to begin the hunt for an eventual replacement to begin grooming at quarterback. Cutting Manning before the 2019 season when he’s 38 would save the team $17 million in cap space.

That day hasn’t arrived, though, and Manning has tallied some impressive stats over his unheralded career that included two Super Bowl victories. With his big day against the Rams, he joins some elite company in the all-time passing ranks.
