What happened: The last vestige of hope for the Broncos, their defense, abandoned ship on Sunday against the Eagles. Philly scored 31 points in the first half on their way to a 51-23 win.
Broncos vs. Eagles: Philly’s blowout win recapped in a 2-minute read
The Eagles just keep rolling. This week right over a Broncos defense that used to be one of the league’s best.

How’d it happen: Carson Wentz threw three touchdown passes in the first half and jumped out to a 31-9 lead. The Eagles got some help from Brock Osweiler, making his first start as the Broncos’ quarterback this season. He threw his first interception of the day on his sixth pass attempt in the first quarter. Three plays later, Wentz threw a touchdown pass to Corey Clement that made it 17-3, and the Eagles never looked back.
Who stood out: Wentz added another impressive bullet point to his case for being the NFL MVP this season. He finished the day with four touchdown throws, the third time he’s done that this season.
With Zach Ertz out of the game, Wentz and Alshon Jeffery made a connection. Jeffery had his best game so far with the Eagles, catching six passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Wentz got a much-deserved standing ovation from the home crowd when he left the game with about nine minutes left in the fourth.
Newly acquired running back Jay Ajayi made quite the first impression in his first game since being traded from the Dolphins. He scored his first touchdown of the season on a 46-yard run in the second quarter. Ajayi was brought in for his big-play ability, and he didn’t wait to deliver.
Clement, an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin, led the team with 12 carries. He scored three times too, a pair of rushing scores and a receiving touchdown.
The Broncos defense stood out too, but for all the wrong reasons. And there is absolutely no hope for their quarterback situation. Maybe they’ll go back to Trevor Siemian next week, but it won’t really matter.
What’s next: No breaks for the Broncos (3-5), who host Tom Brady and the Patriots next week. The Eagles, now 8-1, get a bye week before they travel to Dallas in Week 11.
Anything else? Wentz is on pace to throw 41 touchdown passes this season, just his second in the league. Only Dan Mario and Kurt Warner have thrown that many scores in their second season. He’s got 17 touchdowns in his last five games — the only Eagles player ever to do that. Not bad.
Eagles backup quarterback Nick Foles got stripped on his pass attempt of the game. Brandon Marshall scooped it up and saved some face for the Broncos defense.
The Eagles are 8-1 now, and no 8-1 team has ever failed to make the playoffs since the NFL moved to the current format in 1990. See ya in January, Philly.
