Texans’ comeback bid with Tom Savage ends with a disastrous last play vs. Colts

It’s fair to assume Deshaun Watson could’ve scored more than 14 points against the Colts.

The Houston Texans’ horrible week with the loss of Deshaun Watson almost ended with a come-from-behind win against the Indianapolis Colts. Instead, the team’s drive fizzled in the red zone, and one last play ended in disaster.

Tom Savage complete one of his last four pass attempts before a fourth down on the 7-yard line with just two seconds remaining. Facing a 20-14 deficit, the Texans needed a touchdown.

Things didn’t go according to plan:

If the Texans had:

A) Watson, it’s hard to imagine the team would’ve been held to 14 points against the Colts.

B) Duane Brown, maybe Jabaal Sheard doesn’t blow around the left edge to knock the ball out of Savage’s hand.

C) Managed the clock better, it’s possible the team could’ve been more creative with its playcalling in the final minute.

The Texans got a big conversion on a pass across the middle to DeAndre Hopkins with about 40 seconds left that got the ball to 7-yard line. But the next snap didn’t happen until 18 seconds were left on the clock, forcing the team into four quick pass plays.

Houston’s season looked doomed as soon as Watson went down with an injury in practice this week, and the team’s struggles to score against Indianapolis aren’t going to make anyone more confident in the Texans down the stretch.
