Geno Smith was about as successful for the Giants as Eli Manning has been

No quarterback is going to score many points in the Giants offense.

The New York Giants offense is broken and doesn’t have an available fix. It’s missing most of its best pieces — including Odell Beckham Jr. — and isn’t going to be successful no matter who is at quarterback.

Geno Smith took over the job in Week 13 after the Giants unceremoniously benched Eli Manning, snapping a streak of 210 consecutive starts for the 14-year veteran. Unsurprisingly, Smith didn’t solve much in a 24-17 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

In his first start for the Giants, Smith finished with 21 completions on 34 attempts for 212 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He fumbled twice on sacks, affording the Raiders extra opportunities on offense that they struggled to capitalize on.

Altogether, it was an okay showing for Smith highlighted by an excellent throw on his only touchdown pass of the day.

His alright performance mirrored the statistics Manning has put up all year in an offense with four receivers and two offensive lineman on injured reserve, and offensive tackle Justin Pugh currently out with a back injury.

Manning averaged 219 yards per game in his 11 starts and had just 113 yards in his most recent game against Washington. Smith’s numbers weren’t much different.

With the loss the Giants fell to 2-10, and moved up to No. 2 in the 2018 NFL draft order thanks to a win for the San Francisco 49ers. New York is already long out of contention for the postseason and is spending the final weeks of the year evaluating the team’s pair of young quarterbacks: Smith and third-round pick Davis Webb.

Webb was a healthy scratch Sunday with Manning serving as the backup, but the Giants will likely give the rookie some playing time down the stretch too. But if the team is looking for answers about the quality of Smith, it’s tough to say that the game against the Raiders gave a definitive one.
