When the Atlanta Falcons lost the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots, Zoo Atlanta lost a bet with Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, R.I. If the Patriots won, Zoo Atlanta had agreed to name a baby animal after Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
Tom Brady had a Madagascar hissing cockroach named after him at Zoo Atlanta
The zoo lost a bet when the Falcons lost the Super Bowl ... or did they?
Zoo Atlanta held up its end of the bargain. Meet Tom Brady, a baby Madagascar hissing cockroach.
Tom Brady is a member of a large family of cockroaches, the rest of whom are named after characters from The Brady Bunch. Tom Brady, though, is described as “the littlest baby of them all,” and he really is. Compared to the rest of his family, he’s minuscule. He’s so little that he’s almost cute.
In the comments on the video, Zoo Atlanta clarified that naming a cockroach after the Patriots quarterback wasn’t just a petty move on its part. This was the plan from both zoos all along.
Both Zoos agreed to naming a Madagascar hissing cockroach if their team lost when we made the bet. We knew if the Falcons won Roger Williams Park would’ve named one of their Madagascar hissing cockroaches Matt Ryan instead.
Zoo Atlanta has plenty of adorable baby animals right now. There’s a precious baby gorilla, and twin baby pandas. But after Falcons fans suffered through the team blowing a 25-point lead to lose the Super Bowl in crushing fashion, it was thoughtful of Zoo Atlanta to spare fans the indignity of seeing one of those animals named after Brady. The Madagascar hissing cockroach was a much more appropriate choice.
