Love will undergo a scope on his left knee, according to ESPN.com’s Dave McMenamin, and will have to be replaced as an Eastern Conference reserve for the 2017 NBA All-Star Game.
The surgery is a blow to the Cavaliers, who lost starting shooting guard J.R. Smith to a broken thumb earlier this season. He is expected to miss at least another month. It also falls on the heels of LeBron James’ public demand for the organization to add “a f——— playmaker” to a “top-heavy team” lacking the depth to make another championship run.
Cleveland recently signed forward Derrick Williams to a 10-day contract, and he has scored 19 combined points in two games against Oklahoma City and Denver.
Love was enjoying his best season in Cleveland, averaging 20 points (on a career second-best 38.4 percent three-point shooting) and 11.1 rebounds per game. The other forwards on the roster are James, Williams, Tristan Thompson, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, and James Jones.
The Cavaliers have 14 players on the roster and could sign a free agent at the veteran’s minimum. Cleveland also has two sizable trade exceptions, each worth upwards of $4 million, it can use to acquire a forward via trade.
It can also look to call up a player from the D-League.
