The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made the decision to move on from cornerback Alterraun Verner, the team announced Thursday. The development of rookie cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III was a factor in the team’s decision.
Alterraun Verner released by Buccaneers after Vernon Hargreaves’ solid rookie season
Verner should be an appealing option for teams looking for a veteran cornerback.

Verner came to Tampa Bay as a free agent prior to the 2014 season, and has one year remaining on his four-year, $25.75 million contract. The $14 million guaranteed to Verner has already been paid out, so the Buccaneers can make this move without adding any dead money.
Hargreaves started all 16 games for the Bucs last season, and the team was pleased with the rookie’s development. He finished the season with nine pass breakups and one interception.
Verner played in all of Tampa Bay’s games in 2016, starting three, and finished with seven pass deflections and an interception.
That interception came just days after Verner’s father had passed away as the Buccaneers took on the Seattle Seahawks. Verner was overcome with emotion and received support and encouragement from his teammates after the play.
Verner, a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in 2013, should be an appealing option to teams looking for a veteran presence at cornerback. There may also be a home for him here at SB Nation. During Verner’s time with the Tennessee Titans, he was a regular contributor to SB Nation’s team site Music City Miracles.
